Columbia City Bakery Opens Its Doors!
14-Oct-2005
For those of you who have visited the Columbia City Farmers’ Market, you may be familiar with the Columbia City Bakery. They’ve been selling bread and pastries at the market for the last season.
This morning they opened the doors on their new permanent location on Rainer Avenue in the heart of Columbia City. Unfortunately, I don’t have their exact address but they are just a few doors south of La Medusa at 4857 Rainier.
They opened at 7:00 am this morning and M visited at about 7:15. The place was packed, the baker beaming and the neighborhood folks were greeting each other and very excited that the long awaited bakery was finally open! I’ve sampled a few of their wares at the market and heard great things about others. If you are in or near Columbia City I think it would be worth your time to check it out!

Leave it to the Fool to know the culinary scoop in my very own neighborhood before I do!
oh – as long as you\’ve got a columbia city thing going on would you check on Bob\’s Quality Meats and let me know if it\’s any good? ; – )
Hi E!:-) I had the help of the little M-bird! I HAVE heard about the butcher, too, though. I might have to check them out one of these days – too bad they are so dang far south!! ;-) ~ B
Be sure to try the walnut levain; the crust is crunchy, the center is chewy and it is a perfect bread. Croissants rival the french bakery at the Pike Place Market. And to answer E… Bob the butcher is great — the chicken is fresh, the meat is local and the people that work there are wonderful! And they have heritage turkeys during the holiday season. (I\’m going to try one out this year.)
I stopped by the bakery this morning. As I\’m typing I\’m munching on some lovely focaccia – one topped with carmelized onion, the other with tomato (I couldn\’t decide which to buy so got both). Crispy crust – spongey/fluffy bread – just the right amount of olive oil……perfect! This is a great addition to Columbia City. I love that they have pretzle dogs also! I saved that for a future trip. Also stopped by Bob\’s. Unfortunately they didn\’t have any veal shanks for the osso buco I want to make;.
Yuo guys are making me crave that bread – and I\’ve just eaten! The place must be good if we actually got M to break down and comment! (You little lurker you!) And E, osso buco! What time is dinner?? I don\’t want to be late! :-) ~ B
